Heartworms - A Comforting Notion EP
Heartworms is an explosion of modern post-punk glory and a musical excursion circling around the creator, Jojo Orme (Basically, she is Heartworms, alongside her band). What a grand way to enter into the musical mindset with an EP as intense and simultaneously captivating as A Comforting Notion. I have a hard time believing that you’d forget Heartworms once listening to them. Heartworms draws you in and expands with belts and screams. At points the EP feels like a spiral much more satisfying than the one in my head. Repeated at the end of the opener “Consistent Dedication”, the words “endlessly mad” definitely describe many of the feelings touched upon here. If we are all endlessly mad, then we might as well dance and rock out.
A lot of thought and time appears to have been put in these four songs. Heartworms’ lyrics are fantastic, another part of how much of a solid vision she has. It isn’t so much a preview of what’s to come, as it is a launch into the musical stratosphere. Its raw and expressive attitude with a sense of control and confidence makes it so much of a great introduction. The description “post-punk” commonly given to Heartworms is fitting, yet there is something more going on here. There is no mistaking something very singular here, a style that can easily become widely recognizable. Heartworms is already gaining plenty of buzz, no doubt. This record certainly isn’t a secret find nobody else knew about. Considering this EP came out last march, you might have easily heard it by now. If not, it’s still out there waiting for you.
